Buffy vs. Dracula S5E1

I decided to watch this instead of one of the movies to get a feel for how they would condense the story into a shorter time frame and still keep the Dracula story line. The story started out with Buffy not being able to sleep where shes in a tank top and shorts and gets up putting on tight jeans, boots with a heel, a high neck tank top and a black leather jacket to go hunt down a vampire then goes home and back to bed.  To me this is portraying her as The Slayer a strong independent roll.  When the count is first introduced it is when his box of Earth that he was traveling in is getting offloaded at a creepy castle in the middle of a storm after dark and he breaks out of the box and slits the throat of one of the men offloading him then it cuts the scene.  This is like it was in the book where the count needs to travel in a box of his own dirt.  After a dinner with her mom Buffy is hunting another vampire down in tight red leather pants with heels and a form fitting sweater again showing her as a sexual but independent character.  Once she kills that vampire smoke comes into the scene and the Dracula character comes into view and he is tall with extra pale skin, shoulder length dark hair, long nails, dark eyes and the classic black and red cape.  Buffy is very excited when he says that he is Dracula and she tried to go at him with a stake and when that fails her friends come wandering into the scene and Dracula forms behind them and her friend Xander start mocking him and his accent until Buffy tells them who he says he is and Xander then changes his tone and hides behind Buffy and starts to say he is sorry and that he was only joking.  This makes Xander appear to be a weaker character because he hides behind Buffy also showing her as the stronger one. Dracula lunges at them and turns into a bat and flies away.  Which does go with the book that he can change into at least a bat and a wolf.
The gang then gets together to talk about what happened and there is a part in the scene where Buffy is talking to her boyfriend Riley and she says she promises that there was no penetration meaning that he didn't bite her.  They didn't have to use the word penetration but it was another layer to the sexual tension. Later when Xander and his girlfriend and ex demon Anya are walking home Dracula is following them in the form of the wolf on top of one of the buildings and after she leaves he targets Xander to be his eyes and ears in exchange for eternal life.  To the book Xander is the Renfield character.  Xander starts getting very fidgety immediately and later he starts eating spiders and flies. Riley then goes to see Spike to get info on Dracula who is apparently a long time rival of his and owes him money which was a bit of a funny thing to add because Spike is/was an immortal creature as well.  He starts to go off a bit on how ever since he got famous he forgot all about his foes and now hes the biggest threat to vampires because once his story got out everyone knows how to kill vampires.  He mentions the mirror and his special dirt and that he likes fancy places to rest not a crypt.  Some of this was like the book that he has to have his dirt and he can't be seen in the mirror.
Of course there is a bedroom scene where Buff's sleeping perfectly but instead of her tank top and shorts shes now in a spaghetti strap night gown with her hair down and make up on. Dracula appears and she wakes up and Dracula starts using control over her and eventually ends up biting her and the camera is fixed on her face making it look like she is in some pain where the book makes this seem like a pleasurable experience.  In the morning the group gets together again and she refuses to eat and says she had the urge to put a scarf over the bite and cover it up and not tell anyone she got bit until they start noticing she is acting weird. Xander is acting weird also calling Dracula the master and prince of darkness.  Research makes it seen that Dracula can control Buffy but only because in a way she wants him to.  Xander tries to hide that she got bit too by calling the bite a scratch and that she didn't want to worry anyone.  The group agrees that Buffy needs someone to watch over here if she is being controlled and Xander says he will stay with Buffy while the others look for where he is staying.  Sander is impatiently waiting for it to get past dark then he locks Anya in a closet and tells Buffy that he is supposed to deliver her to his master and she goes willingly.  Once they arrive at the castle where Dracula is he takes her to a room with Dracula and he tells Xander to leave them.  Dracula then tries to control her and he does for a little while or at least she is pretending that he is controlling her.  Meanwhile Giles and Riley find Dracula's castle and walk right in.  Dracula tells Buffy that her friends are here but that they will never find them. Dracula tells Buffy that its time for a taste and she says that she won't let him but he says for her to taste his blood not for him to drink hers.  Xander jumps out at Riley saying if anyone wants to get to his master they will have to go through him and Riley hits him once and lays him out. Giles is looking in different rooms and ends up trying to enter a dark room when he falls a few feet to the floor then three women start to crawl all over him and he calls them the three sisters.  Riley finally finds Giles before they hurt him but it was comical because he pulls him from the room and Giles lost his shoe and was all to willing to go back down to get it and Riley pulls him away and tells him no more chick pit for him.  Dracula gives Buffy a little of his blood to show her her true nature and a bunch of scenes flash by and suddenly she is no longer under his control and the fight scene ensues and Buffy finally gets the upper hand and stabs him in the chest and he falls and disappears.  After they leave the smoke starts to reform and what you don't see is that Buffy is standing right there and as soon as he appears she stabs him in the chest again and says shes seen all his movies and he always comes back making some light humor.  He disappears again then the smoke comes back again and she yells at him that shes standing right there and the smoke dissipates and disappears all together.

  1. I also watched this episode for my blog entry. I like how you really analyzed each of her different outfits, especially how when Dracula came to visit her she was dressed in more feminine sexual sleepwear as opposed to the other night when she was just in shorts and a tank top. I hadn't taken as much notice to that as you!

  2. I also watched this episode. I like how you made the connection with Xander and Renfield I also made that connection as I was watching the episode. I also liked how you analyzed the outfits that she was wearing and compared it to the power she had, saying that even though she was wearing feminine clothing she still had a lot of power.
