Dracula vs. Buffy Gender Analysis

In the beginning of the episode Buffy is in bed with Riley, she can't sleep so she goes out to patrol the cemetery. The next day she is on the beach with Riley, he tells her that she "throws like a girl" after he says that to her she then throws the football back at him so hard it knocks him down. They then are retuning to the rest of the gang on the beach because Buffy "slayed the football." Later two men are delivering a crate with dirt in it. They are talking about the crate and it's contents when suddenly a hand breaks through the lid and slays one of the men's throats and kills him. It was Dracula who was in the crate full of dirt.

While Buffy is patrolling the cemetery Dracula appears after Buffy slays a vampire and says to her "very impressive hunt, such power" and she says back to him "that was no hunt, that was just another day on the job." Buffy has a lot of power in this television series. Instead of a man being a vampire slayer its a women and she has great strength and power when defeating the vampires. Buffy asked Dracula who he was after he said that they were not going to fight he apologizes because he thought she knew who he was. He tells her that he is Dracula and instead of being afraid she is shocked and says "get out!" At first Buffy doesn't believe that this Dracula is the real one. She is surprised to know that Dracula knows who she is. When she finally is convinced this is the real Dracula she tries to slay him but he turns into a mist and moves all around the cemetery so that she can't slay him. Xander and Willow come along and see Dracula at first Xander is making fun of him saying that he has "dark prince envy" and asked where he got his accent "Sesame Street?" Then Buffy tells them that its Dracula and Xander then steps behind Buffy for protection.
Later the gang is all together and Buffy is talking about how surprised she was that he knew who she was and she walking talking about his "dark penetrating eyes." The eyes are described in a sexual way, they are talked about like intercourse. That gives Dracula power over Buffy and the other females. They were saying how he was "tall dark and handsome" but his eyes came up the most. The gang decides that they need to do some research about Dracula because there are a lot of myths about him. Most of the things they find are also true in the book Dracula by Bram stoker like cross's and garlic will keep him away. Later Xander is walking home by himself, Dracula approaches him and convinces him to being the slayer to him and his reward is he will get eternal life. So Xander is put under Dracula's spell and agrees to bring Buffy to Dracula's castle.
While Buffy is sleeping a mist comes into her room and then takes on the shape of Dracula. Buffy wakes up and is in a trance while Dracula is talking to her. He sits on the bed with her and asks her to mover her hair and she brushes it to the side. Dracula is talking to her and the camera is focused on his lips and sometimes you get a glimpse of his teeth. He tells Buffy not to fight it and the camera is focused on her lips and her mouth slightly open. Dracula and Buffy are very close on the bed. The camera keeps going back on forth focusing on Dracula and Buffy's lips. The Dracula bites her and her mouth comes all of the way open and she makes a soft moaning sound.
The next day when she wakes up she she's the bite marks in the mirror. She puts on a scarf so she can cover up her neck so no one else sees the bite marks. The gang is talking about the truths that they have found about Dracula. Buffy is very distracted and she gets up to leave. Riley follows her outside and asks her to remover her scarf, she doesn't want to but then Riley pulls it off and he sees the bite marks from Dracula. Everyone is shocked when they find out that she is under Dracula's trance. They decide that she needs to be protected and she can't go home. Xander volunteers to let her stay at his house because he is also under Dracula's spell. When Buffy goes to stay at his house he takes her to Dracula's Gile and Riley are at the castle and the three sister are distracting Gile from getting to Dracula. They are dressed in very sexy clothing. They are moving on top of him very seductively and they keep touching him and biting/ licking his ear. The one sister rips his shirt and then climbs on top of him. He is unable to resist them.
castle. When they get there Buffy pulls out her steak because she wanted to slay Dracula but he tells her to put it down and she does. Dracula cuts his arm and tells her to drink. The camera focuses on her lips for a while, as Dracula is talking to her right before she drinks the blood from his wrist. She then grabs his hand and then put hers lips and tongue on his wrist and sucks the blood from him. She pulls back after getting a flashback of memories and is able to break the trance Dracula has her under. She then decides she is going to slay him. As this is all going on
Buffy fights Dracula and he seems to be winning. They go back and forth and then she grabs a torch and put fire on the table. Dracula transforms into the mist and moves himself to another place in the room. Buffy sees where he is going and grabs the steak and when he turns back into flesh, she slays him. Buffy hold the power, she was able to slay Dracula.

  1. Nice use of quotes from the episode! I also watched this episode, and focused a little bit on the camera angles during the multiple bites, and sucking throughout the episode. You're very right about all of that, I like how you show the sexuality of the episode but also emphasize Buffy's power and how she was able to slay him in the end. It's a good reminder of how she doesn't conform to the stereotypical old-fashioned gender roles.

  2. I like that you chose to focus on the fact that Dracula's mouth was a focal point during some scenes. This reinforces the fascination with the mouth that we talked about in class, but is also interesting because, generally, the woman's mouth is the one that is focused on. In many vampire movies, women are typically the ones who get hypnotized by looking into the vampires eyes. In this interpretation, it's important that you mentioned that Zander gets put under Dracula's "spell" as well. I think this helps to reinforce the viewer that Zander isn't the typical male figure in this show and tends to have weaknesses that are usually only portrayed with female characters. I like that you had a very detailed description of the episode.
